Sealcoating Prep

1

Check the weather forecast and select a period when dry weather is expected for at least 48 hours.

2

Barricade the driveway to ensure that there is no traffic during the process.

3

Do a general cleaning of the pavement by sweeping and power washing.

4

Oil spot prime all oil spots and apply a liquid sealer to deep cracks.

5

Patch deep holes with asphalt patching compound, packing firmly for a flat, solid surface.

6

Apply liquid seal coat with a squeegee or sprayer over the entire surface according to instructions.

Curing Time

Protect the area for at least 36-48 hours for the chemical to set and cure. Apply when temperatures are expected to stay above 55°F to ensure proper curing. Watch out for leaves and debris that might degrade the coating before it has set.

Pro Tips

Application Tips

Sand can be mixed with the product to create a non-slippery surface and provide more consistency to the seal-coating product.

Use a pressure washer to prepare the driveway by cleaning all cracks and removing all debris and vegetation.

Seal coating products can cover cracks up to 1/8 inch wide. Larger cracks should be filled with rubberized crack sealer first.

Oil stains should be removed using an oil stain primer prior to applying the seal-coating product.

Don't expect seal coat to fill potholes. Apply asphalt or pothole fill product to level these areas first.

Two or more thin coats are better than one thick coat. Apply subsequent coats perpendicular to the preceding coat.

Before finishing one bucket, blend in the next bucket. There can be subtle color differences between buckets, and this method helps maintain uniformity. Be careful during application — seal coat products will stain other areas like adjoining concrete surfaces.
